About Sculptra® Aesthetic
Sculptra® is a FDA approved poly-L-lactic acid for the restoration and/or correction of signs of facial fat loss. Poly-L-lactic acid has been used safely for decades in dissolvable stitches and as a facial injectable since 1999 in over 30 countries.
Sculptra® has revolutionized the treatment of the aging face. Sculptra® is a volumizer that has the important properties of stimulating collagen growth and production. Sculptra® is injected below the surface of the skin into the areas of fat loss such as upper cheeks, temples, chin and back of the hands. Because Sculptra® stimulates production of natural collagen, it provides a gradual increase in skin thickness. To
Visible results usually appear within the first few treatment sessions. Sculptra® will not correct the underlying cause of the fat loss, but it will help improve the appearance by increasing skin thickness in the treated area. Facial fat loss can develop as a result of the aging process, endurance exercise, diabetes, cancer, inherited disorders of metabolism and treatment of HIV. Sculptra® is more of a molding product and collagen building agent rather than a dermal filler. It is usually sold by a vial equal to 7 cc’s and not by the typical 1 or 1.2 cc syringes for dermal fillers.
Because Sculptra® is non-toxic and non-immuogenic, no skin test is required prior to the initiation of treatment. Poly-L-lactic acid has been widely used for many years in dissolvable stitches, soft tissue implants and other types of implants. The safety of this material is well established.
How Results with Sculptra® are Achieved
You should know that the results from Sculptra® treatments are not immediate. After your treatment, it may appear that Sculptra® worked immediately because of swelling from the injections and the water used to dilute Sculptra®. In a few days, when the swelling goes down and the water is absorbed by your body, you may look as you did before your treatment. Sculptra® takes time to gradually correct the depression in your skin.
Patience is important. The full effect of Sculptra® injections may take 3 to 6 months to develop. There is also the need to do multiple injections, usually every 3 – 4 weeks, with the average patient requiring at least 3 Sculptra® injection sessions of at least one vial per session to achieve a complete response. Patients with severe facial fat loss may require up to six Sculptra® treatment sessions. Also, the total treatment benefit from Sculptra® is not achieved in equal amounts with each injection. More correction appears with the final treatment of Sculptra® than with the first treatment. It is currently unknown why this occurs. Approximately one month after the last anticipated treatment, re-assessment is necessary to determine if desired correction as been achieved.
As stated in the preceding paragraph, Sculptra® is usually a full face or hand treatment. However, individual areas of the face can benefit from localized Sculptra® treatments. These areas would include cheeks, chin, nasolabial folds, marionette lines and the temples. Any area that will benefit from increased volume and skin firmness can be considered a good candidate for Sculptra® treatments. Sculptra® treatment results will differ for each person. In a clinical study, the treatment results lasted for up to 2 years after the first treatment session, in most patients. Touchup treatments may be needed to maintain the desired effect. Prior to a Sculptra® Treatment Session
Avoid aspirin or aspirin containing products, unless medically contraindicated, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Vitamin E, Green Tea, Garlic, Ginko, Ginseng and St. John’s Wort for a period of 10 days prior to the Sculptra® treatment session. If you have an active skin infection or inflammation, Sculptra® cannot be injected. What to Expect During Each Sculptra® Treatment Session
The length of the procedure typically runs 30 – 60 minutes. Makeup will be removed, if necessary , and the area where the Sculptra® injections will be given will be cleaned with an antiseptic solution. A topical numbing cream will be applied before the treatment begins in order to minimize any discomfort. Sculptra® will be injected in small amounts into the skin using a very fine needle. Multiple injections are required. A chiller will be used during the procedure to the treatment area to help reduce post procedure side effects. The Sculptra® treatment session will conclude with a thorough massage of the treated area to distribute the product evenly. After Each Sculptra® Treatment Session
Certain herbal supplements such as bromelain and arnica may help with prevention and treatment of bruises. Within the first 24 hours after a Sculptra® treatment session, an ice pack should be applied for a few minutes at a time to the treatment area to help reduce swelling. Wrap the ice in a cloth and avoid putting the ice directly on your skin. Avoid excessive sun and UV lamp exposure until any initial swelling and redness has resolved. The treated area should be gently massaged 5 times per day for 5 minutes each time for 5 days. Avoid the above listed medications and supplements, unless medically contraindicated, until any bruising has disappeared.
Sculptra® has the ability to shape and define and to correct and enhance the structural features of the face. It can bring back the three-dimensional appearance of youth. Whatever your motivation, most people enjoy certain facial proportions that, from their perspective, are ideal. For many, this means more of a curving outward of the mid-face, sharpening of certain features, or repair of deepening nasolabial folds. Patients are able to enjoy the benefits of Sculptra for a variety of indications including restoration, rejuvenation, and enhancement.
Possible Side Effects of Sculptra®
The most common side effects with the use of Sculptra® include injection-related side effects at the site of the injection such as bleeding, tenderness or pain, redness, bruising or swelling. These side effects generally last, on average, 3 – 17 days. One possible delayed side effect with Sculptra® can be small bumps under the skin of the treated area. These small bumps may not be visible, and you may notice them only when you press on the treated skin. These bumps tend to happen within the first 6 – 12 months after the first treatment. As with all procedures that involve an injection through the skin, there is a risk of infection.
