About Permanent Cosmetic MakeupPermanent cosmetic makeup is possible through a procedure called micropigmentation in which an organic pigment is embedded beneath the skin to add permanent color. It is also known as cosmetic tattooing. Permanent makeup application is most commonly used on the eyebrows, as eyeliner or on the lips.
Everyone may benefit from the application of permanent makeup to enhance their appearance. Alopecia and vitiligo sufferers, chemotherapy recipients, sensitive skin people who often can’t use cosmetics, vision or motor impaired people, mothers and other busy professionals who may want to look their best all the time but don’t have time to apply makeup, all can benefit from the application of permanent makeup.
The permanent makeup process includes an initial consultation, an initial application of pigment and usually one or two followup treatments to adjust shape, color and/or density of pigment.
Permanent cosmetic makeup procedures are considered permanent because the color is implanted in the dermal layer of the skin and cannot be washed off. However, as with other tattoos, fading can and does occur, requiring periodic touchups.
What to Expect During a Permanent Makeup Cosmetic ApplicationWe may ask that you apply your regular makeup, depending on the area to be treated, in order to determine shape and color. The area is cleansed and a topical anesthetic is applied. The pigment is then applied to the dermal layer of the skin. The initial permanent makeup application procedure takes approximately 1 ½ - 2 hours. A moisturizer will be applied to the area. The color will appear darker immediately following the procedure but will soften and lighten during the healing process which takes approximately 1 – 2 weeks. At this point, you will begin to see the final results.
Side Effects of an Application of Permanent MakeupDocumented allergic reactions to permanent cosmetic tattooing are extremely rare. Regardless, it should be understood that an allergic reaction could occur at any point in time. There will be redness and slight swelling of the skin.
There are no pre-treatment procedures to follow prior to the application of permanent makeup.
Post-Treatment CareYou may resume your regular activities immediately. You may be asked to refrain from wearing makeup depending on the area treated. You will be asked to keep the area clean and moist.
Although the permanent makeup procedure is considered permanent, to some extent, there is flexibility in changing color and shape.
